Missing Persons & Suicide Investigations
The handling of missing persons & suspected suicide cases by WA Police is deeply flawed. There is currently no legislation or formal procedures guiding how these cases should be investigated. Too often, sudden deaths are prematurely classified as suicides without thorough investigation. The case of Amy Wensley is a prime example. Similarly, missing person reports are frequently set aside, effectively forgotten, rather than being actively pursued.
This approach may save police time & resources, but it leaves countless families with unanswered questions, unable to grieve or move forward without closure. While it's true that some individuals choose to end their lives or disappear intentionally, these cases represent only a small fraction. Many others, hastily labelled as suicides or simply missing, deserve more rigorous investigation.
